Controls and settings
While you can use the button on the S5 Max to perform essential functions like start, stop and dock–the bulk of the controls and settings are in the Roborock App. Getting used to the App could take some time if it’s your first time with a robot vacuum, but the App is value-packed and user-friendly.
From the Roborock App, you can see the floor maps, including rooms, walls, and obstacles. You can label the rooms and direct the S5 Max to clean select room(s), aka sectional cleaning. Another option is letting the robot run multiple passes on spots within the house (the kitchen, for instance).
Rectangles can be created on the floor map where you don’t want the bot to enter such as under a dining table.
Further, the S5 Max displays its path on the App so you can monitor its activities in real-time. It will even make announcements on your phone, such as the dustbin being full, or returning to dock.
Most importantly, the S5 Max has a setting where it will use a lower suction on a hard floor and immediately go to max suction when it senses carpet.
Navigation & Mapping
Laser powers movement in the S5 Max. This nav system lets the S5 Max know where it is, where it is going, and how to get there using less power while cleaning with utmost efficiency.
That mentioned, the Xiaomi Roborock S5 Max supports mapping. Mapping is a function in a self-driving cleaning robot that lets it run the layout of a house while displaying the floor plan in a chart-like graph called maps. This unique functionality offer users tons of customization options.
Unfortunately, the S5 Max, as of the time of this writing, doesn’t support multiple floor maps–only one map can be stored. By implication, if you switch floors, the previous plan will be lost. Understand this will only matter if you live in a split level home; otherwise, you’re good to go.
The Roborock S5 Max does a great job picking fine sand, dust, dirt particles, and other debris off of hardwood, vinyl, tile, laminate, carpet, and other similar surfaces.
Advertised at 2000Pa of suction, carpet cleaning on the S5 Max is pretty decent. Low through medium pile carpet, though.
Another favorite thing about the S5 Max is its ability to sweep hair, both human and dog. This means the S5 Max is a perfect choice if the long hair of your wife or daughters bothers you.
Its versatile brush design notwithstanding, the truth remains hair may get caught up after a cleaning session, especially if you have lots of pets and have gone days without vacuuming. The good news follows: the extractor of the S5 Max is easy to clean as the side tips are removable, plus this is recommended to discourage hair build-up and encourage pick performance.
Also, with the S5 Max, there’s something called Smart Top-up. Especially useful in large homes, what the Smart Top-up function does is to ensure the S5 Max charges for only the time required to finish the cleaning job vs. charging to full capacity, which, as you know, usually takes hours. Essentially, the Smart Recharging and Resuming function of the S5 Max makes cleaning FASTER in ample spaces.
If it helps to mention, the Roborock S5 Max is recommended for use on flat surfaces. This applies to robot vacuums in general.
Most mopping robots use the gravity effect mopping system. Or, in other words, water flow can’t be controlled.
The Roborock S5 Max robot vacuum, on the other hand, makes use of an electronically controlled mopping system. That translates to the ability to adjust the water flow from the Roborock App.
Or maybe you want to increase water flow but don’t want to soak your carpet? Use the No-mop function.
At 280ml water tank capacity, the S5 Max will do the dining, kitchen, and living room and not run out of water.
It follows that the S5 Max lets you set schedules in mopping mode. However, the mopping mode works (regardless of whether you need it or not) when the robot detects a water tank with a pad.
The mop pads are also super easy to clean; rub them with dish soap, rinse under hot water, and allow to dry.
The side brush of the S5 Max, made of silicone, soft, and sturdy, looks like it’s going to last for a long time. However, as with most things with mechanical parts, months or years down the line, you may need to change components like rollers, filters, mopping pads, brushes, etc. Click this link to buy authentic Roborock S5 Max spare parts.

Keep in mind that the Roborock S5 Max robot vacuum may not be ideal for split level homes given it currently can only save one map. Also, if you have rugs with dark patterns, this may not be the model to get. However, you can cover the area around the drop sensor (if you don’t have stairs) with white tape, and hopefully, this should now allow the S5 Max to clean your stained carpet.
Other than that, the S5 Max is a fantastic robot vacuum and mop cleaner with reliable operation, effective software, and quality hardware. Not to mention, Roborock has great customer and product support.
